Kinder/Prep, Leighland Christian School,
Burnie, TAS

At Leighland C.S. Burnie, the Kinder/Prep consists of 13 Preps and 10 Kinders, ages ranging from 41/2 to 6 years old. The kinders attend for three days a week. Isabella's Garden fit in well with the K/P theme of Winter, and both classes worked collaboratively on the four large seasons posters. The individual artwork and writing responses was created by the prep students. The text for the large posters was derived from a graffiti writing activity where the preps had a go at writing down their ideas. Through this project the students became familiar with the text from the book and were very enthusiastic about completing the large collages, which took about 2 weeks to complete. They were also more familiar with the concept of seasonal cycles, which linked in to the work some students had been doing in guided reading around life cycles.

Year 1 students spent time reading lots of Aboriginal legends.  They worked in groups to brainstorm a new Aboriginal legend and then decided to write their own legend about "How the platypus got its bill".  Each group worked on the text for a page.  Each student was given a specific task.  Some were given the job of illustrating a page in KidPix while others were given the job of narrating a page using an MP3 recorder.  The digital story was produced using Windows Moviemaker.  The sound files were combined for import into Moviemaker using Audacity.
