More Reading Ideas

  • If you have a favourite book from last year go back to the books from National Reading Day 2009 for more ideas.   http://nationalreadingday.nlnw.edu.au/Reading-Day-Books

  • A Rose for the ANZAC boys by Jackie French is a CBC Honour Book in the Older Readers category. It provides its readers with a unique perspective on the First World War – the story of the women and their tireless and heartbreaking work tending to the soldiers. The activities selected for this book centre on the sharing of story and understanding the perspectives of those involved in war. They are intended as a springboard for the sharing of story that is appropriate to your individual school and community.

  • Polar Boy by Sandy Fussell is a great book for upper primary exploring some familiar themes in a setting that may be unfamiliar to many students. This engaging book is set in a 14th century polar community. You will meet Iluak as a frightened child who becomes a courageous hero as he follows his destiny within his small community. It is a fascinating novel that is brilliantly researched.

  • How to Heal a Broken Wing by Bob Graham is the CBC Winner in the Early Childhood category. It will appeal to many ages because of the themes and beautiful illustrations. The ideas here are focused on the younger reader but they can be adapted and widened if this is the book you would choose as a springboard for your story sharing.

  • The Big Little Book of Happy Sadness by Colin Thompson is a CBC Honour Book in the Picture Book category. It is another picture book with wide appeal. It explores loneliness, friendship and fulfilment through the life of George, his grandmother and his dog Jeremy. The ideas for this book are designed for children in the lower to middle to primary years, but again could be adapted to suit an older audience.
